Knife of the month, august 1998
In this page we will, every month, display a new knife, made by one of the members of our group. Every knife will be accompanied by a description, so it will be possible to see who made the knife, and from which materials. If the knife is designed for a specific use, this will also be indicated. In this way it is our intention partly to show the results of our efforts as knife makers, and also to pass on ideas and new inspirations to fellow knife makers. If you have questions or comments about one of the knives on this page, please E-mail the maker in question.
Knifemaker: Jens Rahbek The blade on this knife was forged by the Danish blade smith Bjarne Boddum who lives in the town Haderslev. It is a pattern welded blade and its relatively sturdy with a central core of carbon steel. Bjarne Boddum is the leader of the historic smithy at Haderslev Museum, and therefore a lot of his blades are inspired from prehistoric findings. The blade has been formed and hardened in a forge, and as such, the exact hardness isnt known. In Scandinavia it is considered a relatively long blade of 90 mm, well suited for all-round use. The handle is a laminate of different sorts of wood: the middle part is a piece of white thorn, and on each side of this is placed a piece of Brazilian rosewood veneer and a piece of briar (both pieces cut from the same block of wood). All parts are held together by 2-component epoxy glue, in this case blue Araldite. The front plate is made from a piece of whale tooth. The sheath for this knife is made from semi tanned leather (un-tanned centrepart). This kind of leather is easily formed when it is wet, and when it dries up it becomes very hard and stable. The un-tanned centrepart makes it possible to make the kind of decoration that in Scandinavia is known as pauting. After drying the sheath is dyed with special leather-dyes, and then treated on the inside with a coating, which will avoid the colour from coming off. The strap is made from fully-tanned leather, that will remain flexible. Finally the sheath is treated with grease, in order to make it as water repellent as possible. Knife maker: Jens Rahbek, the knife was completed in may 1996. |
