The spring course 1999

We had 3 Norwegians visiting us, Jan Arild, Knut Dahl and Harald Gerner. It was definitely not boring !

We made a course for ourselves in the spring of 1999. Here are a few impressions from that weekend, including some selected quotes. We are working at a more thorough description of each activity in the course. They will show on this page when they are ready. We expect to have approx. 1 new description every month.

Listen to Birger "beating up" his first blade together with Jan Arild

Read about:
Birger's design-experience and see the drawing.
Jens, who will tell about Knut Dahl's lecture on design.

jan.jpg (20245 bytes) Quote Jan Arild:

" Birger is one of the finest students I have had, and it is quite obvious that he has seen several blade smiths at work. All he has to do now is to build a smithy, and then it won’t be long before he is the new Thomas Noergaard"

(Birger never tried to forge a blade before, so it was quite a unique experience for him).

knud.jpg (20419 bytes) Quote Knud Dahl:

"Shape is a vast subject, a never-ending theme. That is why art is called the work of the spirit".

"Shape is everything. When you work a lot with design, lines and shapes every day, you will become an expert to see what must be done. It is the shape that clearly shows you know what you do. The design-field is where we all struggle to come up with new ideas and a good shape. Even when you become very good, there is always a challenge in improving the design.

The fact that I have worked with woodcarving for more than 20 years in my spare time have given me a strong design feeling in my hands, and it has given me a lot of strength in my fingers. Working with woodcarving and pauting is very demanding, but there is also a lot of technique involved. It is in the filed of tension between wet and dry everything happens in pauting."

(the picture shows Knut Dahl with a sheath made by Karl Anders Fynbo).

harald.jpg (23659 bytes) Quote Knud Lebech, participating in one of the course section with Harald Gerner (the picture at the right):

"I learn something new all the time, this is incredibly intense."
