Knife of the month, may 1998

On this page we will present a new knife every month, made by one of the members of the group. Every knife will be accompanied by a description, so you can see who made the knife, and from what materials. If the knife is intended for a specific use, this will also be described. In this way we want to show the results of our efforts, and also try to pass on new ideas and inspiration to other knife makers. If you have comments or questions to one of the knives in this page, please E-mail the maker in question.

Knife maker: Jens Rahbek

This knife was made in march 1997.

The blade is hand forged by the Danish blade smith Aage Frederiksen, and it is an all-steel blade in K-990 steel. The blade has been formed and hardened in the forge, and therefore the exact hardness is not known. The blade is 60 mm of length, and with such a relatively short blade you will have a knife that is easy to handle, and at the same time have sufficient length for most use. The handle is laminated from 2 different kinds of wood. The middle part is Bonia, a very hard and stable kind of wood, and on each side of this middle piece I have mounted 2 pieces of briar, that will provide a pleasant grip. The front plate is made from a piece of whale tooth, and between the whale tooth and the wood I have placed some black and red-brown fiber plate.

The sheath is made from semi tanned leather, in which a simple pattern has been pauted. In the pattern I have cut some holes in the leather, so the handle shows. The strap is made from ordinary compressed leather, that will remain supple. The sheath is dyed in brown colours.
