Knife of the month

On this page we will present a new knife every month, made by one of the members of the group. Every knife will be accompanied by a description, so you can see who made the knife, and from what materials. If the knife is intended for a specific use, this will also be described. In this way we want to show the results of our efforts, and also try to pass on new ideas and inspiration to other knife makers. If you have comments or questions to one of the knives in this page, please E-mail the maker in question.

Knife maker: Arne Mikkelsen

Blade: Hand forged blade

Blade smith: Oe. K. Nordheim (Norway)

Handle: A piece from an outgrowth on a birch tree. Decorated with a piece of silver as an "eye".

Making this knife was an extraordinary challenge for me. It is my first knife made in the traditional way. The handle is carved using only another knife as tool, and then sanded down using finer and finer grid. The process of carving the knife was a sort of a "revelation" for me. The knife "grew" from the piece of wood I was working on. I had no exact drawing of the knife before I started, just an image in my head.

The reason why this knife is on the "cover" of our web site primarily is, that I like this little knife so very much. I use the knife myself as a carving-tool in my other work.

Total length 11.0 cm.
